Why go

Ayodhya is a city of great spiritual significance, with many temples and ghats along the Saryu river. Visitors can explore the city's rich history and culture, and experience the local way of life.

When to go

The best time to visit Ayodhya is from October to March, when the weather is mild and pleasant. Summer can be very hot, while winters can be chilly.

Getting there

Ayodhya is connected to major cities like Lucknow, Varanasi and Allahabad by road and rail. The nearest airport is in Lucknow, about 130 km away.

Getting around

Within the city, auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws are easily available. Private cars and taxis can also be hired for the day.

2-day plan

  1. Day 1 · Day 1: Temples and Ghats. Visit the famous Ram Janmabhoomi temple and the nearby Kanak Bhawan temple. Take a stroll along the Saryu ghats in the evening, and enjoy the sunset.
  2. Day 2 · Day 2: More temples and rest. Visit the Hanuman Garhi temple and the Tulsi Smarak Bhawan museum. Take a break after lunch, and then explore the local market and try some street food.

Where to stay

Visitors can stay in the city area, near the temples and ghats, or in the outskirts, which are quieter. Many dharmashalas and guesthouses are also available.

Food

Ayodhya is known for its traditional vegetarian cuisine, including chaat, kachoris and thalis. Many restaurants and food stalls are available near the temples and ghats.

With parents

Many temples and ghats have steps and uneven paths, which can be challenging for elderly parents. It's a good idea to hire a helper or take regular breaks. Early morning and evening visits are best, to avoid crowds.

Good to know

Dress modestly and remove shoes when entering temples. Mobile phones and cameras may not be allowed in some areas. It's a good idea to carry some cash, as not all places accept cards.
